The Health Benefits of Holy Basil

Holy basil, also known as tulsi, is a remarkable herb with a wide range of health benefits. It has been used in Ayurvedic medicine in India for centuries and is considered an “elixir of life” due to its versatile properties. In today’s world, holy basil is recognized as an “herb for all reasons” because it can address various physical, chemical, metabolic, and psychological stresses through its pharmacological actions.

Belonging to the Lamiaceae family, Ocimum sanctum is believed to have originated in north central India and now thrives in the eastern tropics. It is renowned as a potent adaptogen, aiding in stress adaptation and promoting bodily homeostasis. Here are three compelling reasons to incorporate holy basil into your wellness routine:

Oral health

Traditional chemical mouthwashes often contain chlorhexidine, an antimicrobial agent used to combat bacteria in the mouth and prevent gingivitis. However, prolonged use of chlorhexidine may lead to side effects like tooth staining and altered taste perception. Furthermore, it can negatively impact the oral microbiome.

Holy basil offers a natural alternative to chemical mouthwash. In a double-blind randomized trial, 60 participants were assigned to three groups: one using holy basil, another using aloe vera, and the third using chlorhexidine mouthwash. All subjects underwent scaling and rinsed with their assigned mouthwash twice daily for a month. Results showed that holy basil was as effective as chlorhexidine in reducing plaque, gingivitis, and bleeding. It also demonstrated a long-term benefit similar to aloe vera.

Another study published in the Journal of Clinical and Experimental Dentistry involved 30 individuals using holy basil mouthwash, chlorhexidine mouthwash, or a sterile water rinse twice daily for four days. Holy basil effectively combated gum infection-causing pathogens, P. intermedia and F. nucleatum, while displaying an antiplaque effect comparable to chlorhexidine.

Considering the potential causes of bad breath and other oral health issues, exploring natural alternatives to commercial mouthwash products, such as holy basil, is worthwhile.

Stress and anxiety relief

Contemporary research supports the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda regarding holy basil’s potent adaptogenic properties. It is considered a tonic for the body, mind, and spirit, aiding in stress and anxiety reduction—a common concern affecting millions worldwide.

In an animal study, fresh holy basil leaves were tested for their antistress activity against experimentally induced oxidative stress. The subjects received 2 grams of fresh leaves daily for 30 days. The results indicated that holy basil exhibited potential antistress action, partly attributed to its antioxidant properties. Other studies have confirmed the presence of phenolic compounds, such as eugenol, circilineol, isothymusin, isothymonin, rosmarinic acid, and zinc—an antioxidant mineral—supporting many of its pharmacological actions.

Another study concluded that holy basil effectively manages the effects of stress by inhibiting the release of cortisol and other stress-inducing processes in the body. Its psychotherapeutic properties were found to be comparable to diazepam and certain antidepressant drugs. Animal studies have also revealed enhancements in memory and cognition, as well as memory protection during the aging process.

Antidiabetic effects

Almost all parts of the holy basil plant possess properties that can help lower blood sugar levels, particularly in individuals with prediabetes or Type 2 diabetes. Holy basil may also aid in weight management, reducing hyperinsulinemia, insulin resistance, and high cholesterol levels.

A 2020 study demonstrated that the active crude extract of holy basil leaves, along with its active fractions—ethyl acetate/butanol—exhibited significant glucose-lowering effects due to the presence of polyphenols. The researchers of the study concluded that isolating these active components could pave the way for the development of new agents for the treatment of diabetes and its complications.

To incorporate holy basil into your daily routine, keeping tea bags on hand, especially during travels, is a convenient option. You can consume holy basil tea every four to six hours while on the go, preferably starting and ending your day with a soothing cup of it.

In summary, holy basil, or tulsi, offers a natural and powerful tool for promoting great health. Its benefits range from addressing oral health issues without the use of chemical mouthwash to reducing stress and anxiety, and even aiding in managing diabetes. With its rich history in traditional medicine and the emerging scientific evidence supporting its numerous health benefits, holy basil is a valuable addition to your wellness arsenal.
