Introduction to Bach flower essences

Bach flowers, also known as Bach flower remedies or Bach flower essences, are a form of alternative medicine that was developed by Dr. Edward Bach in the 1930s. These remedies are derived from the flowers of certain plants and are believed to have healing properties for various emotional and psychological conditions.

The Bach flower remedies are based on the idea that imbalances in emotional states can lead to physical ailments and that by restoring emotional balance, overall well-being can be improved. Dr. Bach identified 38 different flower remedies, each associated with a specific emotional state or personality trait.

Dr. Edward Bach discovered these essences after making many observations in nature. It is believed that he realized this while walking in nature and noticing that next to a flower, he stopped experiencing the troubling feeling he had at that moment. That’s when he realized that not all flowers had the same effect, and gradually he found each of the flowers that alleviated the different emotions he experienced.

Each Bach flower remedy is believed to address a specific emotional issue. For example, Rescue Remedy is a popular Bach flower blend that is often used to reduce stress and promote a sense of calm. You can find this blend already made, but for the rest you need to choose what are the best ones for you and create your unique blend.

Bach flower remedies are typically taken orally in a diluted form, either by adding drops to water or alcohol or by placing drops directly on the tongue. They are considered safe to use and are often used as a complementary therapy alongside other forms of treatment. Often blending 3-5 different remedies works quite well, as most emotional states are complex. For instance, often underneath anger is grief, so taking a remedy to soften anger AND adding something for shock, or sadness can help with the whole rainbow of the emotional state.

There are 38 different Bach flower remedies, each associated with a specific emotional state or personality trait. How I like to use Bach Flowers

To use them, there are different techniques, and my favorite technique is as follows:

  • Choose a maximum of 5 flowers that you believe will be useful, and among them, I always add Star of Bethlehem, which I consider a basic and should be included in all blends.
  • On the first day, take 5 sublingual drops every hour. Wait for 30 seconds and then you can swallow. Respect the hours when you are sleeping.
  • From the second day onwards, you can take 5 sublingual drops 5 times a day for at least 3 weeks, and then you can rotate them as needed.

This therapy is very useful for children as they often experience emotional changes and may not know how to express them well. While you help them express themselves, it is a good complement for them.

Often, the flowers are tested using kinesiology by professionals, but I always like to choose them based on what I observe in my patients and what they explain to me. If you can go to a professional who can help you choose, it’s even better, but if you don’t have the resources, you can choose the ones you believe are best from this list.

I hope they are helpful to you! Check out the live webinar with Dr. Taylor Pagano and Dr. Renfer about flower essences for more information!
