Background of the Case

In Sweden, the Environment and Cancer Research Foundation (ECRF) recently highlighted a case involving a middle-aged woman who experienced severe health issues following the installation of a 5G base station near her apartment. This installation occurred within 60 meters of her home, positioned on the second floor.

Research Findings and Concerns About 5G

The case study, published in the Annals of Clinical and Medical Case Reports, sheds light on the potential health risks associated with 5G wireless technology, which is being introduced globally. Critics of 5G technology argue that it has been deployed without adequate research into its potential negative impacts on health and the environment. This technology operates within the 300 MHz to 300 GHz frequency range and has led to a significant increase in exposure to pulse-modulated microwave radiation, especially in urban areas.

Recent Study on 5G Health Effects

Until recently, there was a lack of comprehensive studies on the health effects of 5G frequencies. A study conducted in October 2022 exposed animals to 3.5 GHz 5G radiation for two hours daily over a month. This exposure led to oxidative stress, brain cell degeneration, and reduced levels of irisin, a hormone linked to weight loss and cognitive health.

Symptoms Experienced by the Swedish Woman

The woman in the case study developed an array of symptoms soon after the 5G antenna’s installation. These included headaches, dizziness, memory loss, confusion, fatigue, anxiety, coughing, nosebleeds, urinary problems, skin issues, and spontaneous bruising.

Comparison with Previous 4G Installation

The 5G antenna, placed on an adjacent building, replaced a 4G base station. The woman did not experience similar symptoms until the 5G antenna was installed.

Resolution and Recurrence of Symptoms

Her symptoms resolved when she temporarily moved to an apartment away from 5G base stations but returned upon moving back. Interestingly, her dog also displayed health issues, including diarrhea, which similarly resolved and then returned in line with their relocation.

Research Observations on 5G Radiation

Researchers note that 5G technology emits high levels of microwave radiation with spikes far exceeding those of previous technologies like 4G. Measurements taken in the woman’s apartment showed significant radiation spikes, especially near windows and in areas closest to the 5G antenna.

Historical Context of Radiofrequency Sickness and Current Safety Standards

Early Reports of RF Sickness

Radiofrequency (RF) sickness, resulting from microwave exposure, was first identified in the 1960s and 1970s, particularly in Eastern European nations. Affected individuals commonly experienced disturbances in neural, cardiovascular, and endocrine systems.

International Research Findings

Subsequent international studies, including those involving U.S. military personnel, have indicated that non-thermal microwave exposure can induce symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, headaches, sleep disturbances, anxiety, and cognitive impairments.

Evidence from Studies on Non-Thermal Effects

A comprehensive review of various human and animal studies has suggested a broad range of neurological and physiological responses to non-thermal RF/microwave radiation exposure. This condition has been referred to as radiofrequency sickness syndrome or microwave syndrome. Crucially, these non-thermal effects are largely dependent on signal modulation/pulsation and peak and average intensity, rather than heat buildup.

Critique of Existing RF Safety Standards

Challenges with Current RF Radiation Guidelines

James Lin, Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois–Chicago, has raised concerns over current methods of assessing health effects from RF radiation. In an Environmental Research publication, he criticized the reliance on acute thermal effects for setting safety limits, arguing that this approach overlooks long-term exposure impacts.

ICNIRP’s Role and Controversy

The International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), a private organization based in Germany, sets guidelines based on thermal effects. Lin and other researchers from the Environment and Cancer Research Foundation (ECRF) have questioned the ICNIRP’s approach, accusing it of dismissing non-thermal effects evidence, potentially influenced by industry interests. This stance, they argue, facilitates the rollout of 5G technology without adequately considering public health.

Lin’s Critique and Call for Revised Standards

Lin, a former member of the ICNIRP, asserts that the current safety limits lack scientific justification and relevance to public health protection. He points out significant flaws in the guidelines, advocating for a reevaluation based on a broader spectrum of scientific findings.

Global Appeal for Reassessment of 5G Rollout

Scientists’ Appeal to the United Nations

In 2019, a group of 258 EMF scientists from 58 countries appealed to the United Nations for a moratorium on 5G deployment. They argued that the expanding body of scientific evidence indicates potential harm from RF exposure to humans, animals, plants, and microbes.

Concerns Over Human Rights and Health

The scientists emphasized that the health consequences of chronic and involuntary exposure to non-ionizing EMF sources are being overlooked by health organizations. They consider this neglect a violation of human rights as defined by the United Nations, urging for a comprehensive assessment of health effects before further expanding 5G technology.
